Shelly Bengiat
Board of Director
For the past 10 years at Envirotech Education (RTO 31871), Shelly Bengiat has been dedicated to developing practical solutions to protect land and sea. Inspired by Amos Gazit, her journey has taken her to Indigenous communities across Australia and beyond, where she recognised that lasting conservation success depends on empowering Traditional Owners who have cared for Country for generations.
Working alongside the Mualgal people of Moa Island (Mua) in the Torres Strait, Shelly’s commitment to community-led conservation has been strengthened through the Totalai Resilience Indigenous Protected Area project with Totalai Land and Sea Indigenous Corporation.
She witnessed firsthand how Traditional Owner leadership — guided by Ailan Kastom and supported by the Moa Island native title determination — forms the foundation of sustainable environmental stewardship.
To support this vision, Shelly has helped create opportunities that allow communities to:
-
Access accredited training in marine conservation, ranger operations, and land and sea management through Envirotech Education
-
Secure funding for locally-led IPA consultation and environmental projects, including grant opportunities such as GO8176 under the Australian Bushland Program
-
Develop sustainable enterprises — from coral reef restoration to aquaculture and cultural storytelling — that protect Country while generating livelihoods
-
Combine Traditional Ecological Knowledge with modern science and technology to strengthen conservation outcomes and community resilience
-
"Real change can only come when fairness, economy, and sustainability work together." — Shelly Bengiat
