Beginners Drone Operations Training Takes Flight at Boigu Camp, Kubin

Earlier this month, Totalai Land & Sea delivered a dynamic three‑day Beginners Drone Operations Training program at Boigu Camp in Kubin, Moa Island—introducing students to the fast‑growing world of drone technology and its powerful role in community-led projects across Zenadth Kes.

Held across three sessions from 7–11 August 2026, the program formed part of the Digital Skills & Technology Pathways initiative, designed to build confidence, capability, and future-ready skills for young people in the region. With the beachfront as the training ground, students learned in an open, safe environment ideal for hands-on flying.

Building Skills from the Ground Up

Across the first session, students explored the fundamentals: drone anatomy, controller functions, battery care, take-off and landing drills, and basic camera operations. The focus was on safety, steady handling, and understanding how drones can support environmental monitoring, cultural documentation, and digital storytelling.

The waterfront quickly became a shared learning space, with parents and community members joining in—many taking the controls themselves. This intergenerational involvement strengthened confidence and created a supportive atmosphere for learners of all ages.

From Basic Flight to Aerial Footage

By Day 2, students were ready to advance their skills. They practiced more complex manoeuvres and learned how to capture smooth, well-framed aerial footage. Confidence grew as participants applied their new knowledge to real-world filming scenarios, understanding how drones can help tell local stories from above.

Surveying, Mapping, and Real-World Application

The final session introduced students to drone-based surveying and mapping—key tools for environmental planning and monitoring. Participants captured overhead imagery, practiced basic mapping techniques, and completed a simple aerial survey. By the end of the day, they were flying with purpose, collecting usable footage and data.

A Strong Foundation for Future Pathways

Over the three days, students showed clear progress in drone safety, flight control, camera handling, and environmental surveying. The enthusiasm was unmistakable. This training not only built technical skills but also highlighted how drone technology can empower community-led projects, strengthen local monitoring efforts, and open new digital pathways for young people in Zenadth Kes.

The skies over Kubin were filled with learning, curiosity, and possibility—and this is only the beginning.
